I love looking through the back pages of knitting publications to see if there are any Local Yarn Shops near me and woefully the best Midwest shops rarely purchase ad space, so here are a list of places I've personally frequented and have enjoyed!  Links below will take you to a page for phone, website and link to directions:

Georgia:
Eat. Sleep. Knit. - Dallas, GA:  The megastore of yarn shops, specializing in hand dyed yarns.  Indie brands, luxury yarns, organic, if it can be knit they probably have it.  They also offer a great rewards program through their friendly Yarnathon every year!
Rare Purls - Duluth, GA:  Very friendly staff, right around the corner from a delicious pie shop!
Yarn Garden Knit Shop - Lawrenceville, GA:  Yarn shop that's been open for over 70 years, cozy little location, good variery of yarns, great knowledge!

Illinois:
Mary Lynn's Yarn Garden - Bloomington, IL:  Bloomington has a kichy downtown area and this shop fits right in, featuring indie yarns and beautiful yarn bowls from local artists


Indiana:
River Wools - Terra Haute, IN: I try to swing through here on business trip drives, great lace yarn selection!

Missouri:
Knitorious - St Louis, MO:  huge variety of everything yarn, yarn storage and yarn pattern related, wide array of classes, great atmosphere!
Weaving Department Myers House - Florissant, MO:  historic building, cozy location, super friendly staff, great kits!

Nebraska:
Yarn Charm - Lincoln, NE:  Huge selection of yarns, great location if you are a fan of Regia or Knitters Pride, they will also ship!
